BE-SAFE Consortium meeting 2024
BE-SAFE consortium successfully concludes 2024 Plenary Meeting in Barcelona
The BE-SAFE Consortium organized its annual meeting on October 7-8, 2024. The meeting was hosted by Fundacio Salut i Envelliment UAB at the historic Casa Convalescencia building in Barcelona.
The two-day event brought together leading healthcare experts, researchers, and patient advocates to review the progress of the BE-SAFE initiative and set the stage for finalizing the details of the upcoming Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) aiming at evaluating a new intervention for benzodiazepine deprescribing in older adults in six countries.
Discussions addressed the challenges and strategies to reach the main objective of the coming year which is to successfully launch and conduct the BE-SAFE RCT. The meeting also involved close collaboration with the Patient Partnership Advisory Council (PAC) and the Scientific Advisory Board, ensuring that patient and scientific expertise guide the consortium's efforts in advancing quality of care.
The meeting featured presentations and discussions on the latest achievements of the BE-SAFE project, including:
- An overview of yearly accomplishments, delivered by consortium coordinator. Prof. Anne Spinewine.
- Updates on the Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREM) on BZRA deprescribing and the development of patient-centered materials for both patients and healthcare providers.
- Assessment of the progress on the preparation of the multi-country RCT on BZRA deprescribing intervention.
- Sessions on transversal topics such as the project's exploitation strategy, dissemination activities and partner engagement, and the Open Science Framework: environment and usage.

BE-SAFE in a nutshell
The BE-SAFE project is targeting patient safety by addressing knowledge and practice gaps related to the reduction of medications used for sleep problems in Europe. Experts and patients are involved to promote an interdisciplinary and inter-sectorial approach. BE-SAFE is a European research project funded by the European Commission Horizon programme under the work programme HORIZON-HLTH-2021-CARE-05-01: Enhancing quality of care and patient safety) and by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) (contract No 22.00116). The project duration will be from 2022 to 2027.
