World Benzodiazepine Awareness Day
World Benzodiazepine Awareness Day 2026: BE-SAFE Promotes Safe Use of Sleeping Pills Among Older Adults

11 July 2026 marks World Benzodiazepine Awareness Day, an international initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the risks associated with the long-term use of benzodiazepines, sedatives and hypnotics, particularly among older adults. The BE-SAFE project aims to encourage informed decision-making and support safer approaches to sleep and wellbeing.
Benzodiazepines and other sleeping medications are commonly prescribed to treat insomnia and anxiety. While they can be beneficial in specific situations, prolonged use may be associated with adverse effects such as falls, cognitive decline, memory problems and dependence, especially in older people.
To mark World #BenzodiazepineAwarenessDay, BE-SAFE is launching a series of awareness activities across its social media channels, including educational content on the risks of benzodiazepines, as well as expert insights from the BE-SAFE TALKS.
Visit our social media channels and discover practical information, expert advice and resources to support safer medicine use and healthier sleep habits.
