Equipping physicians for benzodiazepine receptor agonists deprescription in older adults: theory-based development of the BE-SAFE intervention
The paper details the rigorous, theory-based development of the BE-SAFE intervention, designed to help physicians deprescribe these medications in a hospital setting across six European countries. To enable physician behaviour change and optimize BZRA use, we identified 11 behaviour change techniques and developed a 6-component intervention including: senior physician endorsement, training, self-monitoring, a deprescription algorithm, and enhanced communication with patients and other healthcare professionals.
The intervention was evaluated by 24 physicians, who confirmed its effectiveness in targeting identified barriers and provided valuable feedback for refinement.
This intervention is now ready for evaluation in a multi-country BE-SAFE cluster randomized controlled trial.
This work is crucial for improving patient safety and optimizing pharmacotherapy in older adults.

BE-SAFE in a nutshell
The BE-SAFE project is targeting patient safety by addressing knowledge and practice gaps related to the reduction of medications used for sleep problems in Europe. Experts and patients are involved to promote an interdisciplinary and inter-sectorial approach. BE-SAFE is a European research project funded by the European Commission Horizon programme under the work programme HORIZON-HLTH-2021-CARE-05-01: Enhancing quality of care and patient safety) and by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) (contract No 22.00116). The project duration will be from 2022 to 2027.
