World Patient Safety Day
Empowering Patients, Ensuring Safety: BE-SAFE project joins the World Patient Safety Day
On September 17th, 2023, the world marks World Patient Safety Day under the theme "Engaging Patients for Patient Safety" with the slogan "Elevate the Voice of Patients!" This global initiative aims to unite patients, families, policymakers, healthcare leaders, health workers, and patient organizations in designing healthcare policies and safety measures that prioritize patients' needs, ultimately enhancing global healthcare safety.
The BE-SAFE EU project proudly announces its contributions to World Patient Safety Day. Firstly, in collaboration with other projects related to the EU's "Enhancing Quality of Care and Patient Safety" call, BE-SAFE will present the inaugural webinar, "PATIENTS INVOLVEMENT IN QUALITY AND SAFETY RESEARCH," on September 26, 2023. This webinar will showcase the benefits of involving patients in safety research, address methodological challenges, and propose recommendations to boost patient engagement at various levels.
In addition, BE-SAFE has launched a successful training program for members of the Patient Partnership Advisory Council (PAC). This initiative aims to empower patients and enhance participants’ skills and knowledge to get involved in research. It consists in five modules on sleep problems and benzodiazepines usage complemented by group discussions and patient testimonials. These stories are vital in understanding patients' needs and experiences with sleep problems, informing patient safety strategies. The program aligns with a patient-centered approach. Topics covered included sleep problems, benzodiazepines problematic, patient safety, patient involvement in research, and research methodologies. Evaluation results revealed high participant satisfaction, with 90% agreement on increased awareness of the issue.
BE-SAFE encourages healthcare organizations, patient advocates, and the public to join its first webinar, "Patient Involvement in Patient Safety Research," on September 26, 2023, via ZOOM (16:00-18:00 h CET). Together, let us foster a safer, patient-centric healthcare environment, particularly in reducing sleeping pill prescriptions for older adults, improving healthcare practices, and enhancing patient well-being.
