BE-SAFE project presented at Choosing Wisely annual meeting in Lisbon
The Choosing Wisely global program aims to promote health decisions based on the best available scientific evidence.
This year's Choosing Wisely International Roundtable was held in Lisbon on September 21 and 22, 2022.
This new annual meeting of the Choosing Wisely program, promoted by Choosing Wisely Canada and organized at the Ordem dos Médicos in Lisbon, resumed the initiative after the interruption caused by the COVID 19 pandemic. Several representatives attended the meeting representing different campaigns of more than 20 countries, mostly from Western Europe, North America and Australia, as well as from other regions of the world, as South Europe, Latin America, Korea, etc.
Precisely, BE-SAFE project, which aims to develop recommendations and best practices to reduce the use of sleep medications in the older people at the European level, joined the meeting. The objective was to inform about the project first steps, as well as seeking complicity and collaboration with other initiatives, such as the Agency of Health Quality and Assessment of Catalonia (AQuAS), which promotes the Choosing Wisely program in Catalonia, among others. The scientific coordinator of BE-SAFE, Dr. Anne Spinewine (Université catholique de Louvain, Bruxelles) presented the project key points and how it will be developed in the coming years. While Laura Fernández Maldonado (Fundació Salut i Envelliment UAB, Barcelona) presented the project mechanisms available for patients, families and senior and patient organizations to actively participate in it through the Patient Partnership Advisory Council. Dr. Carole Aubert (University of Bern) also attended as a member of the BE-SAFE consortium and an active collaborator of the Choosing Wisely program.
Choosing Wisely in a nutshell
Choosing Wisely is a United States-based health educational campaign, led by the ABIM Foundation (American Board of Internal Medicine), about unnecessary health care. The campaign identifies over 500 tests and procedures and encourages doctors and patients to discuss, research, and possibly get second opinions, before proceeding with them.To conduct the campaign, the ABIM Foundation asks medical specialty societies to make five to ten recommendations for preventing overuse of a treatment in their field. The foundation then publicizes this information, and the medical specialty societies disseminate it to their members.
